Faith Is Substance
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” As a young Christian, I was beholden to a few scriptures which you recite and learn. At times, these crude attempts never did justice to the poetry and philosophy within the lines of Biblical verse. However, as with all things, wisdom comes with age...ALWAYS! Lately, I have been in a suspended loop of questions and reflections regarding this idea of faith. Yet, we can apply faith effortlessly to so many things that ride the subconscious of our daily lives from minimal task to existential contemplations of spiritual awareness. But in this moment, where is faith? Better question, where is my faith when I need her?
In the midst of this pandemic and politics, I am reeling from what I see and feel. The cacophony of tyrannical rants served on beds of complicity are deafening. Thoughts explode across the backdrop of my mind....What are we doing? Is anybody listening? Then it slams into your being under a faint voice, where is your faith? Like faith can be worn as a buckle or loose chain purse? People bark these words at you every time it appears to them you are not as strong as they think you are...like by saying that you activate this super hero power grid, a faith shield that is programmed into your DNA and charges up where a crisis is abound.
No...no ...no! Faith is substance; it has substance; I’m not carrying it around as a gold piece offering of the gods. Yet, I know that there is a certain level of responsibility I have for the faith God has allowed me to accrue through rights of passage and plain old everyday life. My faith, your faith has substance because it will engulf each moment in a shield of protection. It is the grit of perseverance and the inspiration in endless pursuits. It is the step ladder on the side of that formidable mountain you are terrified to climb...it is the non-material stuff that appears right when you need it too. The wings of your faith cause you soar beyond the heavens to eternal hands that serve as a nest for weary souls...it is sustaining!
